New year’s resolutions for a healthy and happy 2017

​A new year, a new you. It’s a traditional mantra when January finally rolls around and we all look at our lives. But the opportunity to assess your life is even more important if you are vulnerable or elderly.

Here are some tips from Welbeing on how you can make small tweaks to your lifestyle which can have a big impact to the quality of your life in 2017.

Go green: Well, not completely, but it is even more important to eat fruit and vegetables as you get older and not slip into the habit of only eating what you like. The government’s Eat Well Guide suggests we should eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. But, the good news is that this can be in a variety of forms and does not have to be only fresh-if you or someone you care for has mobility issues it’s worth considering stocking up on frozen or tinned foods that will last as it’s not only cost effective, but means there will always be a reserve for when you’re unable to leave the house. It’s no secret that eating well can aid wellbeing, and this is particularly important to those who suffer from an ongoing medical condition or are at a high risk of catching winter illnesses such as the flu.

Be active: There’s strong evidence that people who are active have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression and dementia. The NHS suggests we aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity every week. Don’t worry; you do not have to do this all in one go. Why not try and split your periods of activity? Getting in to a routine of regular gentle exercise is recommended. If you are able to, taking short walks will also give you the added benefit of fresh air and the opportunity to socialise. If you suffer from falls or are not confident walking alone, you may want to consider a personal alarm or fall detector for reassurance.

Daily tasks

Be independent: While some people rely on the assistance of others to undertake daily tasks, remaining as independent as possible is undoubtedly important to most people.
