The home should feel like a safe and secure place to be. But for those suffering from hearing loss, this isn’t always the case.
According to Action On Hearing Loss, an estimated 900,000 people in the UK suffer from severe or profound hearing problems. Alarmingly, it affects 40% of people over 50 and a staggering 71% who are aged 70 and older.
But if you’re struggling with hearing loss, there are systems available to keep you safe.
Sound and flashing beacon
Suitable for various levels of hearing loss, the sound and flashing beacon combines a visual alert with a loud siren. This makes sure you’re promptly alerted when an alarm is activated, e.g. a smoke alarm or an incoming call. It’s also available in various colours to help you distinguish between different kinds of alerts.
But is this type of personal alarm intrusive?
Not at all. Discrete wireless sensors will be fitted throughout the home by one of our qualified engineers. When necessary, these sensors can automatically raise a local alarm that alerts a carer, key holder or the monitoring centre.
Of course, there are times when a visual alert isn’t enough.
Vibrating pagers and pillow shakers
When you’re out of sight or earshot of the sound and flashing beacon, a vibrating pager is a great solution. This can be worn on your belt or wrist and will vibrate as soon as an alarm has been raised. It can also provide support for carers, quickly notifying them if you need help.
But if you’re suffering from hearing difficulties, there are times when you feel most vulnerable or exposed; bedtime is often a worry.
However, there are solutions designed to reassure you while you get a restful night’s sleep. For example, the pillow shaker is a discrete device that can be placed in bed without disturbing your slumber – unless necessary. So in the case of an emergency, e.g. a fire alarm, it’ll vibrate to alert you.
Importantly, both of these devices can be connected to other telecare sensors, including the sound and flashing beacon. What’s more, these devices work in combination with our personal alarm service. So in case of an emergency, users can contact Careium at the press of a button with their pendant. Whatever you’re situation, you can feel safe and secure at home with us.
