Learning Disability & Autism: I feel more confident out on my own now

Kay is a young adult living with her family. She was diagnosed as a child with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder and is classified as a vulnerable adult.

Kay's story

Kay is aware that her autism makes her a vulnerable adult. She can often misread others’ words and intentions and says that she is very trusting of others. Kay enjoys accessing the community, going on outings with friends and also independently to her day centre placements. She takes the train to reach these places. Unfortunately she was subjected to unwanted (male) attention on a recent train journey and now feels extremely anxious about future journeys.

At assessment we discussed how a GPS device could be used to enhance her safety (as she would be able to raise an SOS alert in the event of feeling threatened). She also liked the idea that her family could ring the device and speak to her at any time and track her whereabouts if they were ever concerned. She felt these features could help her to retain her independence.

A Vega GPS device was provided for Kay. She wears it on a lanyard around her neck, so that she can quickly and easily press the SOS button if she needs it. Knowing that she can then verbally communicate with Careium’s Contact Centre at any time has restored her confidence in travelling by train and in going out independently in the community.
